Coastal Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy
Jeffrey A. Hein Head Instructor
Jeff is owner and head instructor of Coastal Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy. Jeff has been involved with training and instructing combative sports for over 30 years. He began his martial arts training as a wrestler at age 12 were he excelled in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. He competed both nationally and internationally. During this time he not only placed in local tournaments but placed at the national and international level. The pinnacle of his wrestling career was in 1978 were he won his first gold medal in national international tournaments and was named by the AAU as one of the top competitors of the year. After high school, Jeff began to train in judo, were he holds a ranking of shodan, traditional Japanese jujitsu with a ranking of 5th Dan. After competing in judo, Jeff discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and began training under Professor Charlie Kohler. After successfully competing in BJJ, he retired from competition to focus upon learning BJJ and becoming an instructor. He holds the rank of brown belt in BJJ with nearly 18 years of training. His ranking is recognized and certified with the Jiu Jitsu Global Federation. He became a federal agent in the 90's and after working as a United States Border Patrol Agent he transferred to the Federal Air Marshal Service several months after 9/11 and began to instruct and help develop the CQC program for the service. During this time, he was introduced to Krav Maga. Jeff became a believer in Krav Maga as the future of CQC for counter terrorist operators. He has dedicated himself to both being a student and instructor. Jeff has been involved in Krav for 14 years and holds the ranking of a level V instructor and brown belt and an advance force instructor with the Krav Maga Alliance.
Jeff's federal career (18 years) was cut short with a severe neck injury leaving him disabled. Jeff did not want to give his training and teaching because of his disability and began to develop training programs that allowed him to continue his training. He quickly found that most martial arts instructors were ill equipped to work with the disabled. He decided he wanted to share his knowledge to other practitioners and instructors. He began to look for an organization that supported the disabled in martial arts. He finally came across the Adaptive Martial Arts Association. Jeff was recently accepted by the organization as a research consultant were he researches and writes about the issues of being a disabled student and instructor for the adaptive community. In addition to his martial arts teaching and training, Jeff is an active social justice and animal rights advocate. He holds an advance degree (MS interdisciplinary studies; homeland security/sociology and philosophy) from San Diego State University. He is also working on a second masters in humanities (emphasis in art history) from CSU Dominguez Hills. Jeff is a passionate instructor of the martial arts and loves teaching all ages, the disabled as well as military and law enforcement. Jeff is also a weapons student and instructor in nunchuckus, BO staff and Filipino Kali. As a cap stone to Jeff's instructional resume, he is studying to become a NSAC TSAC-F in order to help prepare public safety candidates for testing as well as helping public safety officers already in the field to be as fit as they can be. Jeff's philosophical basis for martial arts is Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and although he does not teach JKD, he studies JKD in order to pass on to his students the philosophical under pinning that have been adopted by many MMA fighters. Jeff holds certified rankings in Jujitsu (5th Dan), Judo (Black belt), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (brown belt), Krav Maga (level V instructor/brown belt), Jeff is currently focusing on training in Jeet Kune Do, and expects to earn his black belt in both the Bo staff and Nunchukus later this year. Jeff also has an extensive background in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling being a ranked wrestler in the mid 70's. He plans to upgrade his coaching certification with USA Wrestling and planes to apply as a coach for the junior international program in Colorado. Jeff was inducted into The United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame for his c0ntributions to the martial arts for the past 30 years.
